20th Okarina Ethno Festival Bled 2010

The okarina is a genuine folk instrument, a small flute, egg-shaped small earth ware with eight to ten holes to play. During the festival, original ethnic music is performed from various nations and nationalities. The festival started in 1991 with three groups from Slovenia and Czech Republic, two years later the festival moved to some other Slovenian cities but eventually returned to Bled. The festival is expanding each year in terms of its improving quality. There are fewer concerts than they used to be but the numerous visitors can enjoy the musical jewels from the past times.

Behind the bridge above Mala korita (the Small Gorge), the Vrsnik Valley opens in which the Vrsnik River murmurs with its beautiful rapids, waterfalls and pools.

The circular road towards the chapel of Marija Snežna forks before the storm bridge, which crosses the river bed above Koritca.

It runs partly on the road and partly on the old wood trail.

The chapel, high on the edge of the rock between the hamlets Pod Skalo and Na Skali, was built during the First World War and was renovated between the wars by Italian soldiers before they left for the Fronts in Albania and Greece.

From here an unforgetable view offers itself toward the valeey and its surrounding hills.

Water hurst of Šunik

The road leads along the river Lepenica and connects the start of the valley with its end at the Klement Jug Lodge.

The water hurst of Šunik is in the central part at the confluence with the Šumnik stream in a hidden nook in the middle of untarnished nature and full of wonderful energies.

Its energetic wells can benevolently influence a person's wellbeing.

Across the pools and waterfalls there are several wooden footbridges, there are also benches with views over this miralce of nature.

Beside the circular road, the remains of a mill are still visible with its preserved mill stones, beneath which lies the remains of a saw mill that still served its purpose in the middle of the last century.

Path of memory

The commemorative path leads into the mountains above the Lepena Valley to the Zagreben highland, which was the battlefield of the Second Militia Regiment from Linz.

We are reminded of the horrors of the Soča Front by the chapel LIR 2, which is dedicated to the soldiers that were buried under avalanches during the Christmas of 1915, the Bosnian monument, dedicated to the Bosnia-Herzegovina regiment which in March 1916 replaced LIR2 (similar to the chapel, it was also renovated in 2007), the rocks engraved with the names of the units and their commanders, and the monument BH4,...

The walk to the chapel takes two hours.

The descent runs by the Šumnik gorge with its beautiful pools and waterfalls.

Wine cellar Avin, Gradišče at Vipava

The AVIN farm is located on Gradišče at Vipava. Their main agricultural activities are those connected to grapes. Numerous awards and honours, received by the master Franc Andlovic for his wines, clearly indicate that he is an excellent winegrower.

In Andlovic's wine cellar, one can degust different sorts of wine:
- Pinela,
- Ribolla,
- White pinot,
- Sauvignon,
- Riesling Italico,
- Malvasia,
- Zelen,
- Cabernet Sauvignon,
- Merlot
and a dessert wine, Pikolit, made from dried grapes.

Each year, they organise the traditional Vipava osmica (an 8 day long event in small villages, where installed restaurants sell wine and food) twice: in the pre- Easter and pre- Christmas time. In that time, they offer, besides a wide range of wines, domestic meat products, štruklji in strudels.

Tomažič farm, Vrhpolje, Vipava valley

On the Tomažič farm winegrowing and viniculture have a long tradition. At the moment, three generations are engaged in the winegrowing and wine selling.

In sunny areas around Vrhpolje, they grow different grape sorts. Their wine is matured in large old wine barrels, which gives it a specific characteristic.

In the vaulted wine cellar, they offer guests Ribolla, Malvasia, Merlot, Barbera as well as modern sorts: Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Yellow Muscat and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Petrov Pil, an excellently composed wine under their own brand name, is the sort they take pride in.

Farm Žvokelj, Vrhpolje, Vipava valley

In the old part of Vrhpolje, a village on the sunny slopes of Mt Gora, good wines are made. You can try them on the Farm Žvokelj.

The cellar offers a wide range of Vipava wine sorts: Riesling Italico, Malvasia, Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. Lovers of red wines can try Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.

The pride of the cellar is Rebula, Vitovska Garganija and Zelen, sorts indigenous to the Primorje region.

Near the farm, there is a church with a 14th century fresco.

Special feature:
Footpath through the Vrhpolje vineyards along the Bela torrent; a free-climbing wall and Zemono Manor are close by.

The Fajdiga cellar is located in a tightly built village, Goče, between the valleys of Vipava and Branica. Goče has become a Slovene cultural monument, so the village is attractive to lovers of national heritage as well as nature lovers. Important distinctive symbols of the village, connected also to its development, are vines, wine and wine-cellars.

The Fajdiga family offers white and red wine sorts. Their wine-cellar can accommodate up to 45 guests. Advance notice is desired.

The Vipava valley is a valley of sun, wind and wine. This delightful corner of South-West Slovenia is a highly varied geographical area. Not surprisingly its climate mirrors its varied terrain with a unique blend of mild Mediterranean and continental Alpine temperatures that produce some very special grapes.

Viticulture is the main agricultural sector in this fertile valley (60%) and vines cover over 3000 acres of its total area (350 km²). The small, family-based vineyards are mainly concentrated on terraces in the higher areas where the excellent soil allows both white and red varieties to be cultivated.

Wine making was originally introduced to the Vipava valley over two thousand years ago by the Romans. Wine-making is regarded as a way of life here. Just as it was in 1689, when the famous Slovenian author and historian, Janez Vajkard Valvasor, published his classic description of the area, "The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola". In his book Valvasor claimed that the Vipava valley produced more wine than bread! Vipava even included a vine on its coat of arms!

In the Middle Ages the Vipava wines were particularly popular with the court in Vienna. Quality and dedication have always been the key to the superb wines produced here and local wine makers have always understood the need for research and new techniques. Not surprisingly the first book on wine cultivation was published here by Matija Vertovec and this is where the first agricultural school was established as well as the first wine association over a hundred years ago.

The unique climate in the Vipava Valley produces a host of classic whites, including Rebula, Sauvignon, Malvazija, Laški Rizling and Chardonnay and a wide variety of splendid reds, such as Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon and Modri Pinot. However, what makes this area particularly special are its rare, autochthonous wines. Thanks to the perseverance of local producers and the adoption of modern production methods, many rare and ancient grape varieties have been re-established. This is the home of the exquisite Zelen and Pinela grapes. Two other very old and rare specialties are Klarnica and the unforgettable dessert wine Pikolit, which with its intense peach aroma and aromatic bouquet is a rare treasure for any palate.

The farm fits in the architecture of Podraga village, which is typical of Primorska region: narrow streets, stone walls, small windows with frames, stones on the roofs.

A local name of the farm - Sutor - in Latin means a shoemaker. It is said that there was once also a shoemaker's workshop on this wine cultivating farm.

The cellars on the farm were built in the end of the 19th century; the room from 1933 has been rearranged into a degustatory room, a place for gathering.

The vineyards stretch on the extreme end of the Vipava Valley. They grow Chardonnay, Rebula, White Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malvasia and Sauvignon, all nature friendly and using old methods.

Ajman castle was built by the Loka chief Matija Lampfrizheim in the 17th century (in the year 1689) on the land of three farms.
A large number of huts belonged to the castle.
Its name remained from the landlord Dr. Jože Hayman, who acquired it in the 18th century (in the year 1791).
In the year 1847, it came into the hands of the Detela family by marriage; one member of this family was the county chieftain Oton Detela.
Before World War II it was the property of Dr. Jernej Demšar, a specialist in dermatology in Ljubljana.
During the occupation it was damaged in a fire.
In the year 1961 the Loka Ursuline order moved into the renovated castle.

Its significance for the inhabitants of Maribor

Narodni dom was built by the bank Slovenska posojilnica between 1897-98 according to a plan by the Czech architect Jan Veyrich based on a plan for the town hall in Pardubica. The building was of exceptional importance for the Slovene part of the then Maribor inhabitants, as in it they got a place for all the then Slovene national awakening and cultural organisations. In the cataclysm of 1918 the National Council for Štajerska occupied Narodni dom, for decades after the Second World War it was managed by the military; in it was the home of the Yugoslav national forces - Dom jugoslovanske ljudske armade.

20th and 21st century

It was only after 1992 that it became Narodni dom again. It now is the seat of the Cultural-Event Centre Narodni dom Maribor; in front of the building stands a stylised monument of Prince Koclej. The Cultural-Event Centre Narodni dom Maribor is the organiser of the well known, traditional Festival Lent and numerous performances as part of the event Musical September, Maribor Philharmonic Society Chamber cycle, Comedies, Small stage etc throughout the year.

Town Hall - Rotovž

In the year 1515 the late Gothic town hall was built in today's square Glavni trg, which between the year 1563 and 1565 Italian masters reconstructed in the Renaissance style. Dating also from that time is the balcony (loggia), decorated with relief, on which there is an image of the town’s coat-of-arms, surrounded by two lions and the year 1565 inscribed on it. The façade is enriched with pilasters.

Entanglements with the tower

Above the eastern part stands a Baroque small tower with a bulbous roof, about the construction of which a story says: "The job of building the tower was given to a master builder but he was paid too few gold coins; filled with wrath the builder did not construct the middle of the tower! Can you see the difference?

In the middle of the 19th century the building was given a late classicist look, in the years from 1952 to 1954 it was renovated and given its original image. Of particular interest is the Baroque hall, which was fitted by A. Quadrio. Today it serves for weddings and for the Mayor's receptions. On the ground floor, where there were once the rooms of the town guards, is today the representative restaurant premises Toti rotovž, in the courtyard part of the building is the seat of the Puppet Theatre and a small exhibition room.

Ponds in Podvinci

Near the village of Podvinci, not far from Ptuj, one can find two ponds named »Pacinje« and »Tičnica«. The ponds have existed for at least 200 years. Exceptionally diverse flora and fauna have developed through years on the ponds and in the surrounding forest, which makes this area one of the most important natural habitats in Slovenia. The ponds have earned the title of European Important Conservation Area – Natura 2000.

Not far from the spring of the river Krupa and roughly 4 km out of Semič, the Krupa Castle, one of the largest castles in Bela krajina, once spread out. This was a mighty construction with thick walls, which were reinforced with five towers in Valvasor times. Later the castle was rebuilt into a square multi-storey fortrees with four corner towers and inner arcades. Sevearl castle buildings were located in the vicinity: blacksmith¨s cottage, hayrack, stable and granary. However, in 1942 the castle was burned down by the partisans to prevent the enemy from occupying it. After the war, the locals used the stones to renovate and build their homes, therefore, only the ruins of the castle¨s granary have been preserved.

Lipica, a cultural monument of European and worldwide reputation, is located in Slovenia's karst region, an unusual stony land covered with low bushes, small pine forests, and vineyards. Close to the Slovene-Italian border in a lush green oasis with avenues lined with trees between one hundred and one hundred and sixty years old, the Lipica stud, cradle of the Lipizzaner, has been developing for more than four hundred years. In 1580, the Austrian Archduke Karl II established the stud, and it was the property of the Austrian court until 1918. Its history abounds with stories of emperors and rulers admiring the white stallions and, on the other hand, stories of difficult and dangerous times when the stud had to flee from the maelstroms of war. During wars, it was necessary to seek sanctuary for the herd in other countries, but always, more or less reduced, it returned to Lipica, tenaciously resisted decline, and revived.
Today, Lipica is a tourist and recreation center that is not just interesting for its stud and the white beauties Valvasor described in 1689. It can now boast of its varied offer; in particular, the performances of its classic riding school are an unforgettable experience. Today, Lipica is known as an international venue for traditional equestrian events including World Cup dressage competitions and the Lipica Stud Days. Lipica is increasingly becoming Slovenia's equestrian center where lovers of equestrian sports from Slovenia and abroad meet.

Eight years ago the youth of Semič decided to establish a Country Youth Association in their municipality. On 23 January, 1998 that idea took root in Semič and since then has achieved great success. At its founding, the association numbered 17 young members under the leadership of Mr. Janez Plut. The association immediately began with activities, covering ecological issues as well as quizzes and other competitions. In the year 2000 Mr. Bogdan Rogina from Kot took over the head position of the association and they brought home many victories. Soon after, they organised a local quiz aptly called "Youth and agriculture". Every year they organise 'farm' games, with the highest attendance being recorded at those held at Smuk.
In 2001 they achieved 2nd place at the regional games, which they are especially proud of, as that ensured them a place in competition at the national level, where they reached, for them, an excellent 15^th place. After 4 years as president Bogdan vacated the position and was replaced by Anton Cesar from Brezova Reber. Their first stage play "Entertaining Evening with DPM Semič", was produced in 2002 for which they were highly praised and given encouragement for further performances. During that summer they organised regional games where they achieved an excellent 1^st place which ensured their participation at the national 'farm' games, where they were ranked with an excellent 4^th place.
In 2003 and 2004 they produced some new stage plays, written by some of their members, and received loud ovation both locally and elsewhere. They were also pleased with good results at numerous competitions.
Their new president is Blaž Kambič from Mladica pri Semič.

Smuk is a 546 m high tableland above Semič. Towards south and southeast, Smuk descends through forests all the way down to the foothills of the sunny Semiška gora and to the clustered and partly dispersed settlement Semič. On the road from Dolenjske toplice to Črnomelj, a sign in Gaber directs you to a rather narrow turning, which leads you across Semiška gora to Smuk. The route winds through vineyards and vineyard cottages. The tableland Smuk rises on your left, while the look to the right offers a breathtaking view of Bela krajina.
Smuk is a starting point of paragliders and hang-gliders, and attracts the lovers of these sports from across Slovenia.

Cycling on the Nanos plateau, Vipava

The Nanos plateau is 12 km long and 6 km wide and it has a wide variety of cycling tracks for bike enthusiasts.

There are 4 routes leading to Nanos: the North one is from Podkraj, the East one is from Bukovje, the South one is from Podnanos and the West one is from Vipava.

Of all four routes, two are the most important and they are used by all tourist and visitors. These are the West route from Vipava and the South route from Podnanos. Both ways to the edge of the plateau are covered with asphalt and are suitable for more experienced cyclists.

Asphalt roads and ways through the woods:

The plateau is divided into three areas by length: the top, the bare pastures and the woods. These large areas give cyclists a chance to explore paths through the woods and through the pastures.

These paths are suitable and convenient also for cyclists who like more challenging routes. You can take the macadam road, which continues from the South route in Podnanos, and go up to the summit Pleša at an altitude of 1262 m. In the central area, the pastures, there are three paths: the lower one across Lipe, the middle one across Ravnik and the upper one across Abram.

From the tourist farmhouse Abram the roads lead us across the plateau to the West and bring us to the summit Pleša or to the hunting hut Vojkova koča, where a beautiful view is waiting for us.

Among the main roads on the Nanos plateau you can choose sideways and adapt your cycling tour to your wishes and abilities.

Cycling across the Vipava hills, Vipava

The Vipava hills have an average altitude of 500m and circle the valley on the South side. From Vrabče on the East to the Planina in the West, there are many crest ways and almost all of them are covered with asphalt. They are suitable for more experienced individuals and families, since the difference in altitude among the hills is few 100m. Crest ways offer you wonderful views of the nearby Karst region, the edge of the Trnovo forest, the Nanos’ crest with a plateau and of the Postonjska gateway on the East.

The road takes us to the higher-altitude vineyard: Veliko Polje, Vrabče, Štjak, Goče, Trebižani, Čehovini, Kodreti, Dolanci, Erzelj, Gaberje and Planina. Some roads between the villages are covered with macadam. Many churches on nearby hills keep us company; some of them are covered with a special stone 'skrle'. If you stop at one of the farms, you will be served with delicious home-made dishes.

they are as beautiful as the queens from fairy tales
prepared for a large feast.''

This is how our renowned poet Lojze Krakar celebrated Semič in a verse of a few words. Semič or Šokarija as it is called by the inhabitants of Bela Krajina, covers an area of 147 km2. It spreads to the north, to the sunny edge of Bela Krajina and the foothills of Kočevski Rog and to the slopes of the Gorjanci Hills. Other municipalities here include Črnomelj and Metlika. It takes its name from the family of Semenič, who lived here in the Middle Ages. Today the famous hill Smuk, which is one of the starting points for tourists' exploration of the area, together with Mirna gora, Planina and the Bela ski centre, stands a little beneath the original residence of the Semenič family.
In the middle of Semič is the Church of St. Stephen (Sv. Štefan) which was first mentioned in the year 1228, while Semič itself was first mentioned in the beginning of the 13th century when Henrik Adeški was ruler in Bela Krajina. From Semič there is a most beautiful view of the Semič mountains planted with vines. In the spring, when the sun casts away snow from the sunny slopes, the peaks (Smuk, Mirna gora...) are donned with a green cap.
Semič is famous for its production of good wine, rich cultural heritage and the Peasant wedding which is organised every year in July, and for its culinary offer, which is another reason for you to visit Semič, interwoven with vineyards and white birches.

Vipava is also called the Slovene Venice, developed beside numerous springs of the Vipava River, which is internationally renowned for their extraordinary location, their water and speleological characteristics.

This wonderful natural heritage is enriched by cultural attractions, especially the castles. The oldest one is Stari grad, which stands on top of a steep hill abowe the square and dates back to the 12th century. In 1762, the Lanthieris built a Baroque mansion on the present main square.

The Gothic church of St. Stephen was reconstructed in the Baroque style and is an important art-historical monument. The public cementery contains two original Egyptian sarcophagi, brought from Egypt by the diplomant and Egyptogist Anton Laurin.

Maribor castle

One of the most remarkable architectonic monuments of our city grew exuberantly right in its centre: Maribor’s town castle is surrounded by the busy squares of Grajski trg, Trg svobode and Trg Generala Maistra and in the castle you can visit the Regional Museum of Maribor, which is home to many collections of great value that will certainly impress you!

The castle, which boasts several constructional and style periods, was been built by Emperor Friderik III between the years 1478 and 1483 for the purpose of fortifying the north eastern part of the town wall. The castle was in the course of time changed into a rich feudal residence.

Knights, emperors and popes?

The main room in the castle is the Festive Hall. The hall has rich interior furnishings with pictures of the artistic Quadri family and Laurenzo Laurigo. On the oval ceiling there is the picture of a battle between Christian and Turkish soldiers, which was painted by Johann Gebler from Graz in 1763. In 1874, as was then written by the then chronicler “in front of a selected public” Franz Liszt gave a concert in the Festive Hall. Some well known people resided in the castle including:

- Emperors Leopold I. and Karl VI,
- Empress Maria Theresa,
- Russian Crown Prince and later Tsar Pavel I and
- Pope Pius VI.

Among the more important constructional achievements of the castle are the following:

- the Baroque stairway built between 1747 and 1759,
- the Loretto chapel on the south frontage, built between 1665 and 1675, and
- the Festive Hall on the 1st floor with its wonderful ceiling, painted by Jožef Gebler and its murals.

The eastern castle frontage finishes with a bastion on the northeastern corner. It is the work of the builder Domenic dell’ Allio from the year 1556 to 1562 and it represented the defence point on the town moat.

Take a walk along the town’s wall, which used to run from Trije ribniki (Three Ponds) down to the bank of the river Drava and along today’s street Svetozarevska ulica!

Fauna and flora of Logatec

In the municipality of Logatec, wild animals typical for most of the territory of Slovenia can be found such as deer (Capreolus capreolus, Cervus elaphus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), brown bear (Ursus arctos), fox (Vulpes vulpes) and for this area well known dorm-mouse (Glis glis). In protected areas you can also find endangered and endemic species. The most important sites are Žejna and Zelena dolina, Planinsko polje, Zaplana, Medvedje Brdo, Logaški ravnik and Jezerc.

Žejna and Zelena dolina represent alluval fans, meadows with dominant grass (Molinia spp.) on calcareous, peaty or clay-silt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae). Here we can find different types of butterflies like jersey tiger (Callimorpha quadripunctaria), wild ducks, dragonflies, stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium), fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and plants typical of bogs: long-leaf sundew (Drosera anglica), round-leaf sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris) and fen orchid (Liparis loeselii). Nearby forest provide home for deer, bear, wild boar, fox, lynx (Lynx lynx) and wild cat (Felis silvestris), last two are protected).

Planinsko polje is the unique grassland habitat of endangered amethyst meadow squill (Scilla litardierei). Here we can find 78 different species of butterflies, some are endangered, like the scarce large blue (Maculinea teleius), southern festoon (Zerynthia polyxena) and marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia). Due to corncrake (Crex crex), the endangered species across the world, Planinsko polje was designated as an internationally important bird area. Otherways there are also: common snipe or fantail snipe (Gallinago gallinago), skylark (Alauda arvensis), whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio), whitethroat and barred warbler (Sylvia communis, Sylvia nisoria), white and black stork (Ciconia ciconia, Ciconia nigra), grey heron, great egret (Ardea cinerea, Egretta alba), a number of geese species, kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and occasionally white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla).

Zaplana and Medvedje Brdo are areas of jersey tiger – the butterfly (Callimorpha quadripunctaria) and lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros).

Jezerc is protected because of its transitional bogs and depressions on peat substrates of the Rhynchosporion.

Logaški ravnik and its underground provide suitable habitat for Carniolan primrose (Primula carniolica), ornate damselfly (Coenagrion ornatum), blind cave beetle (Leptodirus hochenwartii), green shield-moss (Buxbaumia viridis), Eurasian lynx, brown bear, grey wolf (Canis lupus), lesser horseshoe bat, yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata), Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex), stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium), cerambycid beetle (Morimus funereus) and narrow-mouthed whorl snail (Vertigo angustior).

Soča Gorge

Conventa has become the centre of meeting industry of South East Europe. This year the meeting and incentives trade show Conventa gathered 113 meeting industry providers from the region and 200 selected meeting planners from all over Europe.

Compared to last year's trade show, this represents an over 35 %-increase in the number of exhibitors and hosted buyers, which confirms that Conventa has strengthened its reputation as the most important event relating to the meeting industry in South East Europe.
